Back flexibility test

Physios, osteopaths and rehab-app teams search for a modified Schober test app, a lumbar flexion camera, or a toe-touch and trunk-flexion assessment for telehealth range of motion. This is the camera-visible test: a side-view fold with straight knees. It is not a tape on the skin, and it does not output Modified Schober centimetres.

One trial is stand, fold, stand, counted on the return. The report lists trunk angle, hip angle, knee angle, and a relative reach for every trial, plus the best trunk angle and the best reach.

TRY THE DEMO

What one trial measures

Trunk angle

Shoulder–hip line versus vertical. This is the fold a side camera can see.

Straight leg, vertical shin

Hip–knee–ankle near 180° means the leg is straight. With the phone upright, ground–ankle–knee near 90° means the shin is perpendicular to the floor. A deep knee bend is a squat and is not counted.

Reach, not centimetres

Arms hang straight down toward the floor. Reach is the wrist versus the ankle joint. That joint sits above the sole, so a wrist below the ankle is a hand toward the floor, not a bad reading. Not centimetres.

Side view only

Face-on hides the fold. The test locks to profile. One stand, fold, stand is one trial.

Who it is for

A clinic tape and two skin marks still belong to a clinician in the room. A rehab app, an osteopath’s remote check-in, or a telehealth ROM screen can only use what a phone camera sees. That is this test.

It ships as a PoseTracker movement, id back_flexibility_test, category physical test. Other exercises keep their usual counter. This one also returns an analysis object on each counted trial: the peaks and a method note. The notice for the app that reads that data is inside the payload, not on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a modified Schober test app?

No. A Modified Schober test needs skin marks about 10 cm above and 5 cm below the lumbosacral junction. A phone camera and COCO-17 keypoints cannot see those marks, so this page does not output Schober centimetres or a clinical cutoff. It is the trunk flexion a side camera can see: stand, fold with straight knees, stand.

What does a lumbar flexion camera trial report?

Each counted trial reports peak trunk angle (shoulder–hip versus vertical), hip angle (shoulder–hip–knee), the minimum knee angle, and wrist-to-ankle reach as a relative distance. Reach is not centimetres. A letter grade still exists on trunk tilt; the report is the product people read.

Can telehealth range of motion use a face-on camera or a toe-touch with bent knees?

Face-on does not count, because the fold is hidden. Bent knees do not count, because that movement is a squat. The person stands side-on, keeps the knees straight, folds toward the floor, then returns to standing.

Is the back flexibility test a medical device or a diagnosis?

No. It is a camera measurement of a side-view fold. It is not a medical device and not a diagnosis. The customer remains responsible for any clinical or regulatory use.
